While toys may be fun to unwrap on Christmas morning, sometimes the best gifts are the ones that last a lifetime.

Non-material gifts can provide a fun and memorable experience that turn into memories kids can hold onto for years to come.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not knocking toys. Play is the primary way we facilitate learning here at Joyscape, so I would never discourage toys. But changing things up every now and then can open you and your loved ones up to a world of discovery, laughter, and love.

Here are 5 unique gift ideas for the little ones in your life this holiday season.

  • These gifts are fun because they are gifts that keep on giving! Nowadays you can find fun subscriptions for just about anything. Amazon offers a huge variety of book subscription boxes that can be delivered every 1, 2 or 3 months. KiwiCo has STEM project boxes for each age range that can arrive monthly for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. We Craft Box’s monthly subscription box comes with 4-5 crafts every month and enough supplies for 2 children/crafters to make them!

  • From sports to theaters and theme parks, there is no shortage of things to do in the Bay Area. Consider buying tickets for a Sensory Friendly Film screening at AMC Mercado in Santa Clara or AMC Bay Street in Emeryville. Or tickets to a Science Safari with the Youth Science Institute in Los Gatos. Some great websites to get ideas for events are: https://www.bayareakidfun.com/ and https://www.510families.com/

  • Don’t visit just once! The Bay Area is home to some amazing Zoos, Museums, and Playspaces. Thanks to memberships, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one visit! According to the Oakland Zoo’s website, their zoo membership pays for itself in as few as two visits! Legoland Discovery Center in Milpitas has 3 different membership types that all offer 25% off guest tickets for when you have friends or family visit.

  • Give someone the gift of trying something new! Purchase classes from your local art studio, dance studio, or maybe even soccer clinic! Top Flight Gymnastics in Fremont offers “Pre-Flight” introductory classes for kids up to 5 years old. Other ideas are: swimming, karate, skating, music, and foreign language lessons.

  • Making homemade certificates for special activities can be a fun way to create lasting memories together, such as an at home living room fort and movie night, or a Special Day with Grandparents/Aunt/Uncle. You can also plan a day of rock climbing, golfing, volunteering or playing tourist in your own city. Don’t forget to bring a camera to document the fun!
