Water Readiness and Pool Safety Skills
Water can be a wonderful source of joy, connection, and adventure—but it can also present unique challenges for neurodivergent children and their families. Joyscape’s Water Readiness & Safety Skills sessions are individualized therapy sessions designed to help children build greater comfort, confidence, safety, and independence in and around the water.
Depending on each child’s individual needs, sessions may focus on reducing fear or avoidance of water, increasing tolerance of water on the face and body, safely entering and exiting the pool, following water safety directions, responding safely during unexpected water entry, and developing foundational swimming skills. For children who are already highly comfortable around water, therapy may instead focus on building awareness of boundaries and responding to important safety cues.
Because every child’s relationship with water is different, goals and sessions are developed collaboratively with families based on the child’s current skills, comfort level, and priorities. A parent or caregiver participates alongside their child, learning practical strategies that can continue to be practiced during everyday pool and water experiences.
Whether your family is preparing for swim lessons, hoping to make pool time feel more manageable, or looking to strengthen essential safety skills, sessions are designed to meet your child where they are and build from there—at a pace that feels supportive and achievable.

These are individualized therapy sessions designed to help children build skills related to comfort, safety, and independence in and around the water. Depending on your child’s needs, sessions may target skills like safely entering and exiting the pool, tolerating water on the face or head, following water safety directions, developing foundational pool safety skills, and responding if they unexpectedly enter the water.
-
Not exactly! While sessions may include swimming skills, they are individualized therapy sessions rather than traditional swim lessons. Our clinicians use their clinical expertise along with their previous swim instruction, adaptive aquatics, and lifeguarding experience to develop goals based on each child’s individual needs.
-
Sessions may take place at a family’s private or community pool or another mutually agreed-upon pool. We’ll work with interested families to determine whether there is an appropriate location available.
-
Sessions are provided by experienced Joyscape clinicians who also have backgrounds in lifeguarding and safe swim instruction. Mikayla serves the South Bay, Samantha serves the Peninsula, and Rachel serves the East Bay.
-
Quite possibly! Coverage will depend on your child’s insurance authorization and insurance restrictions/individual circumstances. Our admin team will review this with interested families prior to scheduling.
-
No! Children can participate at a wide range of skill levels. Some children may need support simply becoming comfortable near or in the water, while others may already love the water but need help developing safer and more independent skills.
-
Yes. A parent or caregiver who is comfortable in the water must be present and participate in the pool throughout the session. If siblings attend, another adult must be available to supervise them so the participating caregiver can focus on the session.
-
Sessions are generally 1-2 hours depending on your child’s needs. We’ll typically spend the first 10 minutes discussing current skills and concerns, and making a plan together before entering the pool.
-
This will vary! Water readiness and safety skills can take time to develop, and families should be prepared for the possibility of multiple sessions. Your clinician will collaborate with you to determine appropriate goals and recommendations based on your child’s progress.
-
Families will need to provide access to an appropriate pool and a private onsite location where the clinician can change before and after the session. Families are also responsible for any pool entrance or facility fees associated with the session.
