      <image:caption>Sparkler Information Sparklers reach temps of 1.200 degrees. Always supervise children and ensure proper handling. Glow sticks can be great alternatives. Firework Displays Firework displays can be dazzling and fun. But always be sure to leave this to professionals. The safest way to view is from a distance. Plan Ahead for Sensory Needs 4th of July events can be loud, crowded, and bright. If you attend an event, know what amenities are available. Make sure to bring headphones, earplugs, and other sensory aids just in case. Create a Break Space Many people might be overwhelmed by firework displays. If possible, create a space where sensory breaks can be taken. An inside room or quiet car with window shades. Have snacks, water, and toys to help distract! <image:caption>Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the Nobody Nowhere by Donna Williams is widely regarded as a groundbreaking work in autism literature, offering a deeply personal and raw perspective on what it means to be autistic in a neurotypical world. It has inspired many within the autism community and beyond. Nobody Nowhere is seen as an important but complex piece of autism literature. It was pioneering in its time but is now often discussed with nuance, recognizing its value and limitations. The book explores her experiences with sensory sensitivities, social isolation, and communication challenges, as well as her journey toward self-understanding and diagnosis as an adult. Williams describes developing coping mechanisms, including creating imaginary friends and masking her true self to fit societal expectations. <image:title>Joyscape Therapy Blog - Spring Activities</image:title>
      <image:caption>First up, we have a “Flower Soup” sensory activity. This one is pretty simple and straightforward but can be a lot of fun for us sensory seekers. Start off by finding an empty bin and foraging around for some flowers. Wildflowers in the grass, a few off your neighbor's bush, the dandelions in the back yard. This can be a fun learning opportunity in itself. Practicing scanning the environment, following a point to “look!”, using a pincer grasp to pluck each flower, and describing the colors you see!</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Joyscape Therapy Blog - Spring Activities</image:title>
      <image:caption>Next up, we have another way to use your neighbor's flowers with “Flower Prints.” For this activity, it might be a little easier to ensure you have flowers with bigger petals. A nice big sunflower or large daisy would be great. With a few blobs of paint, we can take each flower, dip it into the paint, and press it onto blank paper to see what kind of prints we can make. You can turn this into a matching activity by matching up the color of the flower to the color of the paint we splash it in!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Joyscape Therapy Blog - Spring Activities</image:title>
      <image:caption>Our final Spring activity is an age-old favorite: peanut butter pine cones! Substitute for any other nut or sun butter, of course. Pine cone bird feeders can be a great way to work on motor and self-help skills. Manipulating a knife and spreading peanut butter on each part of the pine cone while practicing smoothing it out target both! Sprinkling the seeds to cover all the peanut (or sun, almond, etc.) butter requires multiple motor skills. Plus, once you’ve hung up the feeder, there will hopefully be more opportunities when watching the birds. Like following a point to look, labeling birds, and describing what they look like.</image:caption>

Since our kids will be asked what they are thankful for as they sit around the Thanksgiving table, I love how this book can give them food for thought on how to incorporate gratitude into their everyday lives. <image:title>Joyscape Therapy Blog - Trick or Treating Safety</image:title>
      <image:caption>The first thing to begin preparing for is your child’s costume choice. Whether your child has sensory sensitivities or not, having the right costume can make a world of difference. Consider the weather in your area. Will your child need to be wearing a snowsuit under their Superman muscles? Ensure your child is prepared for the extra layers if necessary (avoid being 7-year-old me crying about wearing a leotard under my Josie and the pussycat’s costume. It WAS the end of the world). After the costume is chosen, consider adding bright or reflective pieces to increase your child’s visibility during the dusk hours. Reflective tape strategically placed, light-up shoes, reflective candy bags, etc. Not only do you want to be able to spot your child running from house to house easily, but you want to ensure motorists especially will easily be able to see you and your child crossing the street. Know where you are going to go. Unsafe situations during Halloween often arise when we find ourselves in areas that are poorly lit or do not have adequate sidewalks. Avoid having to risk a brisk walk along a dark road by planning your route. It’s a great idea to visit or even walk the route beforehand at the same time you plan to trick or treat. A street that is quiet at noon might be different later in the evening. That spooky house on the corner might be cute in full sunlight, but when the shadows start creeping out, it might be better for nervous kids to skip that one. This can also be a great time to prime your child before the big day. Halloween is often filled with new sights and sounds. It can be overwhelming for anyone, including the parent whose idea this was to go in the first place. By practicing walking the pre planned route, you can give yourself and your child a chance to acclimate. Hopefully having some idea of what to expect can increase the likelihood all of the novelty experienced on Halloween will not be too overwhelming.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Joyscape Therapy Blog - Water Safety Tips! - Infographic text: Adapted from Red Cross Water Safety</image:title>
      <image:caption>Learn Water Competence Know your limitations! Never swim alone. If possible, choose locations with lifeguards on watch. Be aware of environmental risks (tides, currents, rip currents, shallow and unclear water). Check conditions before you go! Learn Swimming Skills Find a swim class for you or your child's skill level. Learn 5 skills recommended by the red cross in different environments: 1. Enter water that's over your head, and return to the surface. 2. float for 1 minute. 3. Turn over and around in water. 4. Swim 25 yards. 5. Exit the water. Be Alert to Help Others Pay close attention to weak swimmers and children. Know the signs of drowning. Take CPR and first aid classes. Designate an adult to be the 'water watcher', to keep their eye on those in the water at all times. Use Layers of Protection Ensure there are barriers between vulnerable people and danger. Teach children to always ask permission before going into water. Lifejackets are recommended for all. At home, fence in pools or water features for added barriers. Know Signs of Distress A swimmer may need help if: they are not making forward progress. Are vertical in water and not making progress. They are bobbing in the water and quiet. Their mouth may be at water level, they are swimming in a ladder climbing motion. Incase of Emergency If anyone is unaccounted for, always check water first. Immediately alert lifeguards. Know and be able to recognize the signs of distress. Do not attempt a rescue if you are not a strong swimmer. Use the "reach or throw, don't go" method of rescue. Prepare The more you learn and prepare, the more likely you are to avoid water emergencies. Find more information and resources at: How to Prepare for Emergencies: Water Safety</image:caption>

      <image:title>Weston bio - Behavioral Program Director Weston Tow has experience working with children, adolescents and adults diagnosed with Autism and other intellectual disorders. He began his career as a behavior therapist and moved his way up to a BCBA working for school districts and doing intake/case management for in-home ABA cases. His favorite areas of interest are social skills and verbal behavior. He finds social skills come naturally to him and loves to see his clients make new friends and play with other peers. In his free time Weston enjoys to watch sports, play video games and travel. He has visited 18 countries in total and can't wait to get back onto a plane once the pandemic is over!</image:title>
